Equestria Gaming at 13 - Looking Back and Moving Forward!

On January 12th, 2011, at the dawn of the pony fandom and juuuuust before it would paint the internet pastel pink, a fan named Strawberry Spice registered the blog that would eventually become Equestria Gaming. After a quiet first few months, the site officially opened on April 3rd — thirteen years ago today! Over the next decade-and-then-some, we've seen a whole heck of a lot: the first steps of the fandom, Pon-E3, the rollercoaster ride that was the life of Fighting is Magic and Them's Fightin' Herds, alllllll the way on down to the end of Friendship is Magic and the beginning of the next generation of My Little Pony. So many periods of high energy power posting sandwiched between lengthy radio silences, the coming and going of more than a dozen staff members, and no less than three changes of ownership in five years. It's been a wild ride!

2023 was a record-shattering year for Equestria Gaming... and not for any reasons worth celebrating. Except for the five month window in 2016 when the site was actually dead, it has become the low-water mark of the site's history, with a whopping three whole posts and an almost half-year-long outage of our inbox and the arcade. You could very well make the argument that, as of last year, there was barely any difference between uptime and outage to begin with — we rather infamously stopped checking the inbox, and over 90% of the games in the arcade hadn't worked in years. For all intents and purposes, it seemed like Equestria Gaming had finally, at least in spirit, joined most of the other G4 sites from the early days in the digital afterlife.

Well, we say that it doesn't have to be that way, and it won't! Over the past few months, the winds of change have been blowing behind the scenes here at Equestria Gaming, and today we're proud to announce we're re-launching the site! Read on below the break to find out what we've been up to, where Equestria Gaming is headed, and how you (yes, you!) can be a part of it.

Introducing My Little Longplays!

Over the past 14 years, there's been a whole heck of a lot of pony games that have come and gone. While there are plenty we remember fondly, and some that are still going strong to this day, the vast majority have been forgotten. Flash and HTML5 games, being browser based, are easy enough to preserve and keep in the public eye... but what of the countless ancient PC pony games that have long since faded from memory?
Welcome to My Little Longplays, a new site feature dedicated to full playthroughs of all of the fantastic pony games that time forgot! To start things off, we're heading back to the magnificent, far-off year of 2013 and having an intense battle against Fluttershy for the title of "Shhh!" World Champion in this game developed by Vanni. Who will win? You'll just have to watch and find out!

Lyra's List 3.0!

In Olden Pony Times™, Equestria Gaming featured a recurring series of posts titled Lyra's List. The idea behind it all was simple: help the development of pony fan games along at every stage of development, from concept to completion. Originally, it was a list of game design documents for projects in their earliest phases, but would later include signal boosts from developers in need of a helping hand, and a list of folks of all creative stripes that projects in need could get in touch with.
A wonderful idea, right? Absolutely! Unfortunately though, it suffered from a pretty major design flaw: it was a monthly feature with zero hold-overs between posts. It made sense to do it that way at the height of the pony craze in 2012, when the absolute torrent of new projects and volunteers ready to join them coming in every month would've eventually made Lyra's Lists hilariously long without things rolling over. In the years since, though? Well, things are just the tiniest bit slower, to say the least! When we tried bringing Lyra's List back in 2017, we failed to take that into account and make the necessary changes, and ultimately things didn't get very far due to low submissions.
Seven years later but hey, who's counting, right? certainly not me!, we're giving Lyra's List another go! This time, we've decided to tweak the format a little bit to (finally!) compensate for the times. Starting now, Lyra's List will now take the form of a dedicated page (use the link above or the much cuter link in the navbar!), and all submissions will remain on the list for a period of one year, unless a shorter duration or removal are requested. We're hoping that these changes will (again, finally) make Lyra's List the resource it was always intended to be, even if it's better late than never.
If you're reading this, submissions are officially open, and we hope to hear from y'all soon!

The Adventure into Resurrecting Adventure Ponies

A journey into fiddling with old flash files
Greetings! The resident code Kirin and web master of the site here to report on a little adventure, anecdotal as it might be.
Some of you might have noticed our recent attempts to give the site a little kick, as hard to see as it might be, and s far that has mainly included going through the good old Arcade. Games added, and revised, as well as the main addition of getting Ruffle properly integrated into the site with scripts, so none of you need to install any browser plugins! As well as Ruffle works, the games should work right out of the box for you!
With the overview out of the way, one of the major issues are the ways some of the games were put together a decade ago, when flash was still alive and no one thought of the day the Adobe would drop it. Adventure Ponies, for one, the official cute little pair of games, officially made and hosted by Hasbro and The Hub, back in 2012 and 2013. It's a classic... and it doesn't work. We wanted to fix that.

The Equestria Gaming Arcade: Flashpoint Edition

Download the EQG Arcade Flashpoint Playlist!
Updated 12/10/2025: repurposed this playlist to include all the quality pony games on Flashpoint which we couldn't include on the Arcade for one reason or another
Hi! I dunno about you, but I think it's about time for another one of those patented, old-timey Unfashionably Late Equestria Gaming Dot Net Posts. Man, remember those? Feels like it was just... uh, the last post. And the one before that. And the one before that. Can't forget the one before that either...
...Anyway, so when Adobe Flash kicked the bucket a few years ago, the Arcade went with it. While we've tried keeping it going with Ruffle, a Flash Player emulator, a very sizeable chunk of pony games are currently incompatible with it and will continue to be for the time being.
Luckily, though, there's an excellent alternative!
BlueMaxima's Flashpoint, to paraphrase the website, is a preservation project dedicated to not just Flash games, but also content from older formats like Shockwave and a whole host of more modern ones. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the project's contributors, they boast a whopping 150,000 games preserved, all ready to be rediscovered in the comfort of one very user friendly program! I'd recommend checking out the website linked above if you're new to Flashpoint, as they can explain things a lot better than I can!
So, what does this all have to do with the Arcade? Two things: first and foremost, that 150,000 preserved games just so happens to include all but 9 of the games from our collection (check below the break for a list)! Secondly, one of the key features of Flashpoint is the ability for users to curate and distribute "playlists" of games, which allows us to provide an Equestria Gaming Arcade playlist!
Importing the playlist is super simple! From the games tab, just hit "import playlist" at the bottom of the tab and select the EQGArcade file once you have it downloaded. Then you'll be right back to playing pony games like it's still 2012! Happy horsegaming!

As of February 2024, the only games currently missing from Flashpoint are nolcip21's Pinkie Fun and Luna Fun, both of which are playable in the Arcade. If and when these finally make their way to Flashpoint, the playlist will be complete.

Flash is Kill - What's Next?

art by  亚凛酸

Hello horse friends, today we have a long-overdue update on the state of affairs. Specifically, what we want to do for the arcade now that Flash is no longer supported. If you're curious about our plans, you can find out more after the break!

UPDATE
The arcade can now be sorted by "Ruffle Compatible," which displays all games that are functional with the emulator, each of which should play in your desktop browser without difficulty! We will  continue to update the section as devellopment furthers and compatibility improves.

Of course, HTML5-based games all run flawlessly, and there are developers who are converting their games to this format. We soon plan to include more of these and  futher expand the list of playable games!

I Can't Believe It's Yet Another Arcade Update!

Hey there, folks! It's your ol' pal and local maintenance man Magitronique here with yet another slew of arcade upda-

...wait, what do you mean "literally who?" I post here all the time, dude! Didn't I just put up an arcade update, like, yesterday?

...Oh. Uh, sorry about that. Wow.

Aaaaanyway, there's been some maintenance done on the arcade! Spike's Day Off and the Starlight Glimmer Simulator are back in working order after who even knows how long at this point. Additionally, we've just been able to add a few new futzi01 games we didn't already have! Canterlot Siege 2, Canterlot Siege 3: Inversion, Canterlot Siege 4, Crystal Crunch Story, Luna's Stars, and the Most Epic Pony Game Ever are now available to play!

What are you still reading this for? Go on now, go play!

Let's Talk About Equestria Gaming!

I'd say "let's just skip the dumb one-liner intro and just jump straight into it" but it seems like that ship may have already sailed. Whoops!
The prerequisite dumb and unsurprisingly-unskipped one-liner intro aside: with Season 9 of our favorite colorful horse cartoon now currently underway, and Equestria Gaming itself having very celebrated its own eighth year, we figured behind the scenes that there really won't be any better of a time (like, y'know, probably ever again) than now if we wanted to get ourselves back in order and right back into the pixel pony news game for the final season. To that end, we've put together a little something we (or at least I) like to call the State of the Horse Website Anno Domini Two Thousand and Nineteen™ (or SOTHWADTTAN™ for short, if you like!) in order to discuss a few small site-related things; namely what's changed as of late, what we'd intend to or perhaps just like to change (if anything) and, most importantly, making your voice heard on what we do! If that sounds like it's up your alley, then please check it out below the break, if you'd be so kind!

The (Apparently) Yearly Arcade Update

Oh, uh, hey there. How's it going?

Wow, I can't believe it's only been *checks notes* seven whole months since my last post that I totally didn't disappear again after making even though I implied I wouldn't. Sorry about that!

Anyway, just like last year, there were a small slew of problems with the arcade for various reasons that have now been fixed. As a result, Hoofball, Catch the Scootaloos, Spike's Day Off, and a handful of the Pony Platforming Project games are now playable again after what is *considerably* likely to be a downright embarrassing amount of time.

That's all for now, folks! We now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Arcade Updates!

First things first, hello there, folks! It's certainly been quite a while, hasn't it? Hopefully there won't be another "quite a while" for... well, quite a while yet! But that's a spiel for a different post, I figure, let's get on to the actual news, haha.
I noticed sometime last week that a fair number of the games (10, to be precise) had actually stopped working for various reasons since the last time I gave everything a once-over, which was sometime last year. Thankfully, all but one game, Rainbow Dash's Cloud Dodging Fun from the now-defunct Penta Studios (please drop us a line if you have a copy!), was replaceable thanks to archived downloads of the games floating around the internet. In addition to replacing the broken ones, I've also had the pleasure of adding a whopping 18 new games on top of that, which brings our current game count to 129! Which is just absolutely ridiculous in the best possible way.
That all said, what are you waiting for? Go play!
tl;dr: We've fixed all of the broken games in the arcade and added some new ones!

Lyra's List #18 & The Future of Lyra's List

Well, ladies and gents, we tried. Unfortunately, we're just not receiving a workable amount (read: usually any) of submissions for Lyra's List, and that combined with what we've seen in the comments from the two previous entries, has led us to decide to shelve these posts indefinitely. We've concluded that, simply put, the fandom at-large and the horsegamedev scene itself just isn't active enough to warrant these dedicated posts anymore; there's just not enough signal nowadays for these smaller projects and ideas to be lost in the noise like they used to.
Honestly, though, we feel that this is actually a good thing in a way, as all active projects can now get their "help wanted" posts on our front page without need for competition or compilation posts to catch what we'd otherwise miss. Not to mention this frees up some small resources for and gives us all the more drive to add other site projects somewhere down the line!
So, with all that said, down below is the totality of what we've received over the past two entries, and to their submitters we extend our deepest thanks for participating! Happy developing!

The Equestria Gaming Arcade Has (Finally) Been Restored!

Well, it only took us, like, eight months to finally get around to it, but the arcade has finally been fully restored, thumbnails and all! ...Or at least as fully restored as we can manage, anyway.* We've got a whopping 113 colorful horse games to choose from now (over the, like, 24 we had when we started, haha), and I'm sure there'll be more to come over time! So, that all said, what are you waiting for? Go play!
*Surprisingly, only one game (!) out of over 100 others has been lost to history, which is admittedly sad but statistically wonderful, all things considered. We'd honestly expected just a bit more difficulty in getting the actual games themselves together; whether that'd be because the only source of a game had died, which is what cost us the aforementioned one game, or because a creator's work had become relatively scattered in recent years, making hunting them down a bit of a chore (lookin' at you, futzi01).
Also, we definitely need to change that old banner over to something newer at some point. I never understood what the above is even supposed to represent. What's even happening there?

(April Fools) Equestria Gaming Requested to Cease and Desist, Goes Underground

Edit: Before I cause any more undue stress, this post is just a joke. Take it with a grain of salt :)
Hello all! Hope you're having a good day so far. Ours hasn't been so peachy.

A few hours ago, we received a Cease and Desist notification from Habsro, Inc concerning our "violation of Habsro Inc.’s common law trademark rights, common law service mark rights, and trade name rights related to their MY LITTLE PONY property."

Needless to say, this is a crushing blow for the website, and at this point it seems very unlikely we'll be able to continue to provide our current services. Head down past the break for more details.

Equestria Gaming Schedule Test

Our little pony gaming site has grown quite a bit over this past year and a half - including views from the Arcade, we've almost hit 4 million pageviews! We at Equestria Gaming aim to continually improve our site as we grow, providing more and more varied content for you all. With our new submit system and big improvements to the EqG Arcade in the works, we've started working on improvements here and there.

Today marks the first day in a weeklong test of a new weekly posting schedule for Equestria Gaming - something to make sure you get a big share of pony gaming content each and every week. You can find this test schedule below the break. Keep in mind that this is what it is - a test, and is definitely open to change or improvement.

Presenting Equestria Gaming's Online Arcade!

At Equestria Gaming we pride ourselves on being the #1 source for My Little Pony fangames (at least, we hope so!). But as you might have noticed, lately we've slowed down somewhat (not in speed, we're highly optimized when it comes to speed and SEO). Was the current generation of authors going the way of Strawberry Spice? Nope! We've just been preparing something really awesome that we hope you all enjoy.

Introducting the Equestria Gaming Arcade, a place where you can access all of your favourite online MLP fangames in one easy website, with even more on the way! We have classics such as Story of the Blanks, Super Filly Adventure, along with enjoyable minigames like Catch the Scootaloos, Derpy Hooves sweet dreams, and the ultimate cure for boredom, Waiting is Magic! Pretty much any browser-based game is supported, so if you have any Adobe Flash, HTML5, Javascript or Unity3D games then feel free to submit them to us.

Anyhow, the arcade is located at http://arcade.equestriagaming.net/, and currently features 8 games (more are in the pipeline!). The features are not completely final yet either, we plan on adding a ratings system in the near future and maybe some extra eyecandy for those with modren browsers. Enjoy!

Countdown to Season 3 (Through Banners)

One of the most difficult journeys the brony community must endure is the long, everlasting offseason. We here at EqG aim to help that wait until Season 3 seem a little bit shorter, in any small way we can.

I'll be releasing approximately 3 new banners a week, representing in chronological order all 52 episodes of Seasons 1 and 2 until the opener's airdate is announced. It'll then be calibrated so that the last banner (part 2 of the Season 2 finale) will end on the night before the season premier. This current banner kicks it off - Friendship is Magic, Part 1.

Changes to our Theme

Lately we have been making many changes to Equestria Gaming. Most of them were behind the scenes such as performance optimizations and while those were quite useful we always had it in the back of our minds to make visible improvements to our site. So as you've probably noticed, we've currently themed our site around Queen Chrysalis to celebrate the season finale and the reveal of a new villain, along with an entire race of emotion-eating monsters. This theme will probably not be permanent and is not yet complete, we would appreciate it if you leave some feedback in the comments.

New Youtube Channel!

Attention readers!

Due to circumstances beyond our control we have been forced to create a new Youtube channel. Our old one was only accessible to Strawberry Spice (who is now inactive), but the new channel is accessible to the entire team, which means that you should be seeing more videos from us such as playthroughs, trailers, and maybe even a video review or two!

So in case you were wondering, here is the link to our new channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/EquestriaGamingVideo.

Enjoy!
