Starswirl Academy Goes Completely Non-Pony

Some artwork from the Starswirl Academy blog.
Original Post

After spending a couple months as one of the pony fandom's most popular projects, Hasbro decided to go easy on Starswirl Academy for some reason and ask that the characters be renamed, in addition to some slight modifications to their designs. This means that it is no longer pony-related in the slightest, but is now yet another generic "schoolgirl dating" visual novel with not much going for it aside from its pretty art and the reasonable cost of $0. They've taken down all their trailers and demos from the internet, by the way, so you might want to hang onto your copy for now.

Before you ask, this does mean that yes, we won't be posting about Starswirl Academy anymore (unless an "unofficial mod" comes out to make some...erm, adjustments to the VN).

Starswirl Academy Demo

Nobody reads this
Starswirl Academy

By some strange coincidence fangame news and releases tend to come in short bursts, with everybody releasing something at around the same time. Chances are, most of them are probably not involved in a conspiracy (especially these guys, since Starswirl Academy technically isn't a fangame at all), but I still find it amusing, yet at the same time rather annoying. At least it's not like they mean any harm, right?

Anyhow, hope you all enjoy the demo. I'm not really going to mess around with it until the final thing is released, due to my not being particularly interested in the genre (which I accidentally typed as "drama", for some reason).

Starswirl Academy Debut Trailer

About time they released a trailer for Starswirl Academy, and it has everything you might expect. Humanized ponies in schoolgirl outfits, pretty backgrounds, synthesized music, etc. Now about that protagonist...it's probably for the better if I don't say that much about him, although I'm honestly not all that surprised. At least this is almost guaranteed to turn out better than, ahem, that other pony visual novel did.

I would write more, but things are kinda hectic around here; the boiler room flooded while the cat was taking a dump in it. Needless to say, she got more of a shock than you will when you discover the main character's identity.

Trosh: The Movie: The Game

Trosh: The Movie: The Game

For some reason it seems that fangame releases seem to all be clustered around the same time, followed by long periods of silence from everybody. These usually provide an excellent opportunity to search around a bit, find some projects that have been overlooked or remained obscure for long periods of time. I'm not entirely sure if Stabyourself.net's (they're the guys who made Order of Twilight, by the way) Trosh would count as a pony fangame or not, given that you run around shooting pony OCs that belonged to an annoying user on their forum, but at least it's something, right?

Last time I checked, the OS X build for this game was broken. And yes, I do have some more games to hopefully post later on today.

Starswirl Academy at the Crystal Fair

A teaser for Starswirl Academy
Starswirl Academy

Strangely enough for a visual novel, the identity of Starswirl Academy's protagonist has remained unknown ever since its unveiling, with the promise that they'd reveal him "soon enough". Now that they're holding a panel at the Crystal Fair in Saint Louis, we might finally get some answers. They're showing off a demo of the project at 11:00 am CST on Saturday, and afterwards the demo shall be released for the general public to play. Now, hopefully they remember to release OS X and Linux builds of the demo...

Come to think of it, I'd be rather amused if the demo never actually revealed anything about the main character, or featured an entirely different protagonist from the real thing.

Gates of Tartarus 0.3.1

Gates of Tartarus 0.4 - Absolute Power
Gates of Tartarus

After his latest game received negative reception from us a week ago, Bhaalspawn finally decided that it'd be a good time to fix up his game after letting it sit for several months, and has released a new patch for it that apparently addresses most of my complaints from the review. I haven't tested it out myself, but if you were disappointed with the previous version, now might be a good time to give it a second chance.

Release notes below the break.

Questria: Princess Destiny on Indiegogo

Ok, so I'm late on this one - I blame my long hiatus. However, for those of you who still haven't heard, the developers of the stalled project Questria have put together a really impressive presentation and game trailer over on Indiegogo.

The project titled Questria has been in the works for a long time - originally, it was planned as a 3D pony game, until the developers officially detached the project from the My Little Pony name. Now, it seems the game has re-emerged with all pony-related vocabulary and trademarks conspicuously absent - but the developers seem to be toeing the copyright line as close as possible.

The new Questria trailer shows off some impressive art and 3D gameplay, and the project seems polished and well-organized. However, with character art that humanizes the mane six down to the horns, and names like Trix, Sirelestia and Twibright Spankle, it seems likely that this project is headed for a C&D notice down the road. Hopefully, the team knows what they've gotten themselves into. Check it out!

Review: Gates of Tartarus

Gates of Tartarus title screen
Gates of Tartarus

Last year I reviewed Doomsday Ascending, a 2D RPG adapted from a mediocre fanfic by the same name. The game's creator, Bhaalspawn, has made a point of telling his followers not to submit his various works to Equestria Daily or other fansites, so until today I was not aware that he had later created another My Little Pony RPG under the name "The Gates of Tartarus". The game seemed to be in a decent enough state (although still in an unfinished state), so I downloaded it in hopes that it would be better than its predecessor...

Does Gates of Tartarus manage to overcome its predecessor's flaws and become a decent game in its own right? Find out in our review after the break.

Flankbook Relaunched, BronyNet Updated

Flankbook and BronyNet

Since almost everypony likes social networking sites it was a given that the talented Brony fandom would produce some of their own, and indeed it has no shortage of them. If I recall correctly Flankbook was one of the original websites created for this purpose, although after a couple months it was shut down for various reasons. In the meantime several other fairly prominent websites have arisen such as the RainbowDash NetworkBronyNetBronySquare and Cloudsdale (the latter of which is more of an instant messaging client and also features mobile apps), but Flankbook's developers talked of remaking their website and launching it again for the world to use. Their minimalistic, Boostrap-based website entered open beta today, with more features on the way shortly.

On a related note, rival website BronyNet has recently released a massive update to their custom NewsTime software, which means that it now features realtime updating, profile headers and other fancy stuff like that. It currently offers a lot more than Flankbook and has a less-cluttered interface than BronySquare, but since the former is still in open beta things could change quickly. We also have a BronyNet page at http://bronynet.com/main.php#!/profile-3175, in case you are interested in following us over there for site updates and whatnot.

Starswirl Academy

Dev Blog

The Brony fandom has a distinct lack of visual novels, aside from that My Little Dashie demo and its sibling, Welcome to Ponyville, which is fairly surprising given the amount of talented artists and writers we have lying around, and how quickly these games can be scripted in a good engine such as Ren'Py. Sensing this void, the Zap Apple Project team hopes to fill it with their upcoming visual novel titled Starswirl Academy, and it stars some unrevealed colt in high school who befriends humanized versions of the mane 6. In other words, this is your stereotypical visual novel about schoolgirls and romance, and like many of its peers has seperate SFW/NSFW versions. At least it had good art going for it: I'd say that it already looks quite professional despite being in such an early state. Oh yeah, and since the developers went with a modified version of Ren'Py instead of writing their own engine like Filly Gamez the game runs on Mac OS X and Linux, and an Android port of the game is also planned.

Feel like playing a visual novel while you wait? Then I would suggest that you give Juniper's Knot a try. It is fairly short and lacks ponies (even humanized ones), but then again it's not like ponies automatically make everything better, right?

Review: Doomsday Ascending Part 1

Doomsday Ascending Part 1
Doomsday Ascending Part 1 (NSFW!)
Warning: the game contains Rule 34 imagery, although viewing them is optional.

Videogame adaptions of fan fiction is quite rare, and for a good reason. As can be discovered by simply picking up a story at random from FIMFiction the vast majority of them are quite lousy, and Doomsday Ascending was no exception. It has no redeeming qualities, and unfortunately falls more on the mediocre side of the scale which means that it isn't quite as amusing to read as, say Winnie the Pooh Assimilated by the Borg. The author, Jerry "Bhaalspawn" Peet, was apparently so full of himself that he decided to create an RPG based off of his cliche storm of a fanfic, and claimed that it used a "heavily modified" version of the RPG Maker VX Ace engine.

If you have been paying attention you've probably realized by now that this game is going to suck, but just how bad is Doomsday Ascending? The only way to find out other then playing it is to read our review, and you can do so by continuing on after the break.

Project:Harmony Teaser

Alas, our wondrous fandom still lacketh a MOTHER-style RPG, but fear not! Project:Harmony is here, riding on its shining horse and repelling the forces of darkness with its stunning graphics, terrifying foes (just look at the size of that giganto robot!) and a cast of incredibly handsome Bronies who can love and tolerate the crap out of all haters, even not-so-invincible clumsy robots! For the first time ever I am going to rate a game based off of the trailer alone, and give it a ten out of-

Sorry, I can't keep this up. In case it somehow managed to escape you the above paragraph was a joke, and despite what you might expect Project:Harmony is an actual fangame. They're releasing an actual announcement and trailer for their game on November 21st (which also happens to be my birthday), but they made this silly teaser just for laughs and...I couldn't resist posting it. Sorry folks, but you'll have to wait a mite longer to find out what Project Harmony is actually about...

My Little Dashie Visual Novel Demo

Out of all the My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic fanfics out there My Little Dashie is probably the most beloved. The concept of a man finding a cardboard box and opening it to find his very own filly Rainbow Dash inside was rather cute, even if the story was a tad predictable and considered sappy by some (such as myself). It didn't really surprise me when the nice folks over at The Daily Oat decided to begin work on a visual novel adaption of the classic fanfic, and I must say that it seems to be turning out in a rather nicely. I'll let somepony else review this visual novel when it comes out, but in the meantime why don't you give the demo a spin, eh?

The demo seems to be only for the Windows/Mac platforms, even though the Ren'Py engine also supports Linux and Android. Hopefully they release a Linux binary for the final release, but in the meantime it looks like you'll have to use Wine for this baby. Sorry!

Quest of Memories Cutscene Demo

My Little Pony: Quest of Memories

For a while now there has been a visual novel-style game in the works with the title My Little Pony: Quest of Memories. We didn't bother to give them a post since they didn't really have much to show for their project, but now that they've released a demo showing off the cutscenes we figured that we might as well give 'em the post they wanted. I'm not a really big fan of visual novels, but I hear that some of you folks like them so we thought you might be interested in this.

Enjoy (hopefully)!

Pon-E3 Promo Video!

Yes folks, we just went though the trouble of putting together another of those trailers just to reveal who is attending Pon-E3. Why didn't we just put it in text like the other announcements? Because videos have been scientifically proven by totally reliable sources to be 20% cooler then plain text when used for announcements, that's why! And if you disagree with us, you can take it up with my cat (he's quite smart you know).

Anyhow, the event will start at 6:00am, PST on July 13, and end at 6:00pm, PST on the 14th. The entire thing will take place online and it won't cost you a cent to drop in. And in case you want a detailed schedule of the event you can find it at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TlIHQqEOlpF_y5LGVekI8LizpRcU5Gq3NMgwnV8WcAE/edit?pli=1.

See you there!

XTUX Attending the Calgary Expo

UPDATE: Xtux was turned away from the convention because the building was too full. Sorry everypony!

Equestria Gaming's very own XTUX345 (in other words, me) will be attending the Calgary Comic Con on Saturday. So if you're attending the convention, see you there!

Also, brief post is brief.

Adventure of the Lunarbolts Video Update

Another video update of the Adventure of the Lunarbolts RPG has been released, and it's looking better then ever before. I'm no fan of it's combat system (somewhat bland in it's current state) and the tiles could really use a slight adjustment for an isometric perspective, but Adventure of the Lunarbolts is still shaping up to be a great MLP RPG.

Anyways, so the video is split into two parts, and you can find the second part after the break.

Nintendo 3DS Pony Mii Codes

Two of the Negation Squared team members (the fellows who are making MLP:Rise of Vics and Friendship is Fragging) made a couple humanized MLP Miis. If you're interested in them you can click on the image above to view the large version and scan the included QR codes with your 3DS.

Enjoy!
